My Approach to Coaching

I believe coaching works best when it's genuinely centered on you—your goals, your challenges, and what will serve you most at this point in your leadership journey. Sometimes that means creating space for reflection and clarity. Other times it means development, honest challenge, or practical guidance. I bring both coaching inquiry and mentoring experience, and I'm transparent about when each is most useful.

I work with structure but stay flexible, because the most valuable insights often emerge when we're attentive to what's really happening rather than rigidly following a plan. You can expect me to ask challenging questions, offer honest feedback, and hold up a mirror—always with respect and always in service of your growth.

At the heart of my coaching is helping you develop two capabilities that transform leadership: self-awareness and perspective-taking. The leaders who make the greatest impact are those who understand themselves deeply and can genuinely see the world through others' eyes. This combination enables you to navigate complexity, influence effectively, and lead with both strength and humanity.

What We'll Work Toward

When we work together, my purpose is to help you:

  • Realise more of your leadership potential by becoming more self-aware, reflective, and effective
  • Build and lead teams that are genuinely high-performing and bring out the best in their people
  • Navigate difficult stakeholders and complex situations with greater skill and confidence
  • Understand your impact as a leader and create workplaces where people can contribute, grow, and do meaningful work
  • Make better decisions in complexity by seeing multiple perspectives and thinking systemically

The ultimate goal is not just to make you a better leader, but to help you create the kind of workplace and impact that makes a real difference—to your team, your organisation, and the people whose lives your leadership touches.

In Memory of Dr John Waters

John helped leaders to create robust strategic plans that are successfully implemented by their teams. His expertise in management of technology, marketing new products, and strategic planning was gained from a distinguished career as practitioner, teacher, researcher, consultant, and senior manager.

John held senior positions with 3M Australia before teaching post-graduate courses in the management of innovation and business creation strategies at the University of Sydney and Macquarie Graduate School of Management. He also consulted to large organisations in the steel, electricity supply, and defence electronic industries.

His qualifications included undergraduate degrees in engineering and psychology, and post-graduate research degrees in psychology and management. He was a certified practitioner of Kirton Adaption-Innovation Inventory, and he researched areas such as decision-making in turbulent environments, and the roles of knowledge and commitment in innovation.

We remember John as being inherently curious and someone who enjoyed helping clients flesh out their strategic thinking and then bringing their strategy to life.
